How do I keep
those pesky
squirrels out of
my birdfeeder?
There are two
approaches you can try. One is to use
feeders that squirrels can’t reach or eat
from. The other is to give birds food that
squirrels won’t eat. For example, Cole’s
Hot Meats
(coleswildbird.com),
right,
is coated with hot chili
powder— tasteless to the
birds but too spicy
for squirrels.
GET CLOSER
Avoid bending over repeatedly to do
ground-level work, such as weeding or planting. It’s better
for your back to kneel while you work, or to sit on the ground
or a garden bench, than to bend or twist from the waist.
CAN’T MISS IT
On dewy mornings the
sunlight sparkles on an
impressive web created by
an equally impressive
spider—the female black-
and-yellow garden spider
(Argiope aurantia).
The
zigzag pattern in its web and
colorful markings make
garden spiders easy to
identify. Harmless (though
startling) to humans, they
are important insect
predators in the garden.
